Vinh Moc Tunnels - Magnificent military construction underground in Quang Tri

Where is Vinh Moc Tunnel located?

Vinh Moc Tunnels is a famous destination belonging to the relic cluster "Vinh Moc Tunnels and Vinh Linh Tunnel Village System," located in Vinh Moc village, Kim Thach commune, Vinh Linh district, away from Dong Ha city (Quang Tri) about 15 km southeast and only 3 km northeast of Kim Thach Commune People's Committee.

The tunnel system consists of three floors: the first floor is 12 meters deep for living; the level 15 meters above the ground is used to store food, weapons, or meetings; and the third floor is 23 meters deep and is used to avoid bombs. The entire Vinh Moc tunnel system has 13 doors leading to the outside, including 7 doors leading to the sea and 6 doors leading to the hill; each tunnel door is considered a vent.

From Dong Ha city, the administrative and commercial center of Quang Tri province, it takes about 1 hour by motorbike along Highway 1A heading north and then turning onto a small road down to the sea to reach Vinh Moc Tunnels.

This is an attractive tourist destination for tourists who love to explore and learn about history. This work was officially recognized as a special national monument by the Prime Minister in 2014. Following the journey from North to South through Highway 1A near Vinh Linh Martyrs Cemetery, visitors only need to turn left and go about 13 km to reach Moc Bay tunnels.

Vinh Moc Tunnels - legendary underground "village"

It is known that Vinh Moc Tunnels in Quang Tri were commanded and designed by Mr. Le Xuan Vy, who was the head of Vu Trang 140 Police Station, and were built between 1965 and 1967. This project has a length of up to 1700m (excluding alleys and apartments), about 1.8m high, and 13 doors, including 7 doors to the sea and 6 doors to the hill.

The entire tunnel area is divided into 3 floors, of which the 1st floor is located 8–10 meters above the ground, 421.82 meters long, the 2nd floor is located 12–15 meters above the ground with a length of 508.08 meters, and the 3rd floor is located 508.08 meters above the ground. land up to 23 meters; the length is 130.35 meters.

Inside the Vinh Moc Tunnels, people cut deep into the walls to create niches (apartments) that can be used for 2-4 people to live together. In addition, the tunnel system has a full hall with a capacity of 50 to 60 people, a well, a surgical station, a cooking stove, a warehouse for weapons, ammunition, and food, a medical station, and a household... It is known that during the war years, up to 17 children were born in the heart of the Vinh Moc tunnels.

This special military structure has great significance and was created with the strength and intelligence of the army and people of Vinh Linh. Underground life continues despite the rain of bombs and bullets. The project not only ensures safety and maintains life for the people on the line of fire but also serves the war effort and provides support to the battlefield, making a great contribution to defeating the destructive war of American imperialism.

Vinh Moc Tunnels are considered a legend in the middle of a fiery earth with architectural value and have become a very unique historical and cultural heritage, as well as the pride of the people of Quang Tri.
